Travel Trend: The Gifting of Travel

December 3, 2021

Consumer product experts are predicting that supply chain backlog may provide challenges for shoppers this holiday season, including longer shipping times. Compared to a pre-pandemic period (Jan 2020), the prevalence of out-of-stock messages has risen a whopping 172 percent going into the holiday season, according to a recent Adobe trend update. Consequently, travel is being used as an example of the perfect holiday gift.

The desire for experiential purchases is growing, according to trend reports. In fact, 77% of the U.S. adult population, would forgo physical presents to take a trip with their significant other, according to a spending and saving study from American Express. In addition, the same survey found that 38% of consumers surveyed agree they will spend more on the holidays in anticipation of a more celebratory season. A recent Adobe survey of more than 1,000 Americans showed that 17% of respondents plan to give “an experience” instead. These included spa treatments (25%) and concert tickets (25%), while others said they planned to give plane tickets (21%) and cooking classes (16%) as gifts.
